It is here to facilitate the bridge between past and present Divers, so that the new can learn from the old, and the old can keep abreast of what is going on with the new.

SANDA is here to support Naval Diving values and culture, whilst enhancing cohesion and branch pride. SANDA attempts to maintain historical diving equipment so we can all remember where we came from because history supports the developments of the future.

There is no doubting the amount of hard work, endurance and true grit that it takes to qualify as a Navy Diver. This commitment and testament to the peak of physical fitness and fighting spirit, is recognized within the armed forces, and lauded by ordinary civilians, alike.

For a Navy diver though, respect for these accomplishments is represented in the Navy Diver Badge, awarded on qualification. Regard for this emblem never leaves a Navy Diver, even when they are old, infirm and no longer able to perform the tasks second nature to a diver.

The most basic action in life is to take a breath. Underwater, this is a privilege that cannot ever be taken for granted. As a Navy Diver, we are taught to survive beneath the waves, which if you think about it, is a very unnatural habitat for human beings. Yet, every Navy Diver knows that if they are in trouble underwater, they need only go to their “buddy” for air and it will never be refused.

Respect for the badge and for a buddy, who will always be there for you, translates into a very special bond between Divers. This transcends whatever ideological, cultural or religious divides that might exist, running parallel to these Brothers in Arms.
